Hey, writers! I’m so excited about this week’s writing reset because we’re going to try something that challenges both our creativity and our ability to get straight to the heart of a story.
Inspired by the famous six-word story attributed to Hemingway, “For sale: baby shoes, never worn.” I want to challenge you to tell a complete story in just six words. Yep, just six.
Ready? Let’s go.
How it Works:
Here’s the deal: You’re going to write a full story using just six words. Sounds tricky, right? But that’s the fun of it. It might sound impossible, but once you start, you’ll see how much you can say with so little. You can tell a story, evoke a feeling, or create a twist.
Here’s a quick breakdown:
Keep it simple: Choose a core idea or emotion you want to capture.
Use vivid words: With only six words, each one has to count. Make them strong and meaningful.
Think about the arc: Your story should have a beginning, middle, and end.
Here’s an example: "Last train. She didn’t make it."
Why it Works:
Why do this? Because it makes us think about what matters in a story. Six words might seem like it’s not enough to tell a story, but it forces us to focus on the essence of what we’re trying to say. It’s not about the word count, it’s about the emotional punch, the image you leave behind, and the space for your reader to fill in the rest.
Sometimes the most powerful stories are the shortest. It’s a chance to challenge yourself, to get to the heart of your message without over explaining. Plus, it’s fun—and also a little liberating.
Let’s Make it Interactive
Drop your stories in the comments. It’s all about experimenting, getting creative, and having fun with the challenge. I’ll be sharing some of my favorites throughout the week, and I’d love for you to share yours, too.
Until next time — keep writing, keep growing.
